I've been wondering, when DoF is released, what mods are you guys thinking of making for it. Whether it is a new race, a new unit, misc object, anything, post your ideas here.

Some mods probably will be. IIRC, texture mods and stuff like that work online, since only you can see them, but if it's a new trainable unit, then probably it wont be online compatible.

Anyway, this is only for ideas, you're not really going to mod anything yet!

I thought special effects (SFXs) were already easily modable for anyone, any VIPs care to fill us in on those?

The Gods have left us, therefore making the old world crumble and turn into ashes...

Without any knowledge of scripting or programming, you can almost completely modify all of the effects - it's become one of my favorite pasttimes in the editor. ^_^ And we have effects for just about anything. So while you certainly can add new special effects, there isn't a need to unless you want something radically different than what's currently possible.

Here's an example of the possibilities within the editor itself. And you can look at the table for all the editable attributes - more or less the same for every effect.

BEFORE: I started off by placing a column of smoke. Just your regular smoke effect - starts small, rises and spreads out, and fades away.



AFTER: Working my magic, I set the 'smoke' to start off in a beautiful teal hue and fade into a deep pink. Next up, I inverted the gravity so that it would rise, reach its peak, and then fall back into the ground when hit by gravity. I gave it a longer life span so it would hit the ground before fading out and gave it a different lighting effect without changing the overall environment lighting. And finally, I changed its rate and ending size and replaced the smoke particle with feathers - you can substitute the texture of one effect with that of any other.

...Whoa. That's impressive. I'd heard of the "unit editor" but I figured it just pertained to stats. Not something that indepth o.0 So basically, with the right textures, that would look just like blowing leaves or something like that. Heck, mess around with it a little and it could like like a magical barrier.

Makes me look forward to the editor more and more...

Yup, change the dimensions and you could have a wall of feathers/fire/smoke/rain/etc. Or you could make a custom aurora borealis, although we already have an object for that.

You can also rather easily save the FX you make in the editor so anyone can use them. There are two ways, one is kind of a 'hack/workaround' way and one actually implements your FX into the game.


You have to make a new text document, and save it as MyFXName.fus in the unit folder.

Then you have to, in the .fus, put at the top:
local T=NewPFXObjectTemplate(SuggestedName)
local T=NewPFXObjectTemplate will make this file become a new FX object, with SuggestedName as its name. 'local T=' just makes it so whenever you refer to T in this file, it will be to the new FX object.

SuggestedName, specifically, will just give the object the templatename of where it was placed in the unit folder (eg if placed in Unit/FX/lol/MyFXName.fus, the unit will be named "FX-Lol-Myfxname").


Now all you have to do is put this code after the 'local T=New..'
T.Texture=textureNameSetInEditor
T.LightingEffect=LightingEffectSetInEditor
....continue for all properties
Then your FX is placable in the editor, by anyone who has your fus file.


Alternatively, you could just save your new FX object as a map copy template (you can map copy things, then save/load them) and distribute that map copy template for anyone to use to paste your FX into their map.

This is so impressive! Also, an object for aurora borealis sounds good, it's very hard to create with other editors.

I really hope the editor is included, so far it looks very well equipped.

BUT LETS FACE IT, the most powerful editor shall be the legendary multiplayer editor (2 people handling the same map at the same time), discussion would be very fluid as well as progress, not to mention incredible stories and plot twists and double the speed.

Wow, this would be so usefull for everybody, vetrens and new people to the editor, you can easily learn and have ufn experimenting andyou can have 2 people working at once for scenario designing duos. One person making the map itsself, the other typing up the code then later puttingit into the map and doing the little edits to make it work fully, almost half the time for a lot of quality.

Because in order to make triggers you need to see the map (Move from point A to point B can't be coded unless you are seeing the locations), you need to see the map to put code or triggers for it, otherwise you are coding blind without seeing what you are working with.

It is a bit hard to understand for someone who hasn't really experienced AoM scenario designing I guess, you used to make Warcraft 3 maps right?

Well you could use an old copy of the map for the positions and script and someone else could add the eyecandy which wouldn't effect the positions.

You need to stop thinking with triggers, use the same map as your friend and write the code then copy and paste it once he saves his work and sends you the new one.

And if you need to have a line of code that works based on specific objects, just ask for the name of them, or leave the object part of the code blank and just fill in that portion once you have the updated map. Scripting is so much better than triggers.

Also - in the editor there's a button where it places the Y/X coords of where you click into the bit of code you want.

Not to mention even for the X,Y to X,Y you can just leave the location portion of the code blank and then fill it in with the 'Get Map Position' button that I explained above when you get the map.

And yes I'm most familiar with the WCIII and SC editors.

Really, you just need to avoid thinking about things like you would with triggers, scripting is so much better. Once you're familiar with it it's faster, you can do it more, and it's way more efficient.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough - click somewhere in the script in the editor then click on the button in the script editing window, then click somewhere on the map. This puts the x/y in your script for you, very simple and easy to deal with coords in the editor.

Wow, that's going to be pretty fun. I imagined the editor to be somewhat like Age of Empires III, not involving scripting, I've heard about LUA, but I thought it was... well, I really didn't know what it was :-P until Azur explained over MSN.

I'll get the game when it comes out, still hoping for a beta key at the moment, and I'll start designing as soon as I get it.
I hope it will live up to what it promises.
